MEDICAL PAYMENTS COVERAGE

MEDICAL PAYMENTS COVERAGE

UNDERSTANDING MEDICAL PAYMENTS COVERAGE

Optional medical payments coverage, often referred to as medpay or MPC, is insurance coverage on your policy or the vehicle’s policy you are a passenger in, that pays for reasonable and necessary medical treatment causally related to the collision, no matter who is at fault for the collision, per your coverage and insurance policy language. This medical treatment can include EMT and ambulance bills, hospital visits, ER doctors, surgery, radiology, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and other types of medical treatment. In most states, including South Dakota, medical payments coverage is optional. In some states insurance carriers offer personal injury protection coverage, or PIP, which has more extensive benefits than medical payments coverage. Medical payments coverage comes in different dollar amounts to purchase, with $5,000 and $10,000 being common, although there are both lesser and greater dollar amounts which can be purchased.

The auto insurance policy providing such medical payments coverage generally has the right to be repaid from an injury claim settlement, this is called subrogation.

If you are involved in a collision, make sure you know the applicable insurance coverages and options for payment of medical bills, including the use of available medical payments coverage.
