What is Medical Payments Coverage?

Medical Payments Coverage (often called MedPay or MPC) is an optional insurance coverage that can be added to your auto policy or the policy of the vehicle you’re a passenger in. It helps cover reasonable and necessary medical treatment related to a car accident, regardless of who is at fault. Depending on your policy, this can include a wide range of medical expenses such as ambulance fees, hospital visits, emergency room care, surgery, radiology, physical therapy, chiropractic services, and more.

In many states, including South Dakota, Medical Payments Coverage is optional. Some states offer an alternative, Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which provides broader coverage than Medical Payments.

Coverage amounts for MedPay typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, though you can purchase higher or lower limits depending on your needs and insurance options.

Keep in mind that your insurance provider may have the right to recover the medical payments they cover through subrogation if you later receive a settlement from a personal injury claim.
